Abdominal Aortogram

Abdominal Aortogram

Have you been experiencing unexplained abdominal pain or noticed a pulsating sensation near your navel? These could be signs of underlying health conditions related to your aorta, the main artery that supplies blood to your body. An abdominal aortogram is a specialized procedure that helps doctors visualize the aorta in the abdomen, detecting any abnormalities that could lead to severe complications if left untreated. At Capitol Cardiology Associates, we use advanced imaging technology to ensure proper diagnoses and effective treatments.

How to Prepare for an Abdominal Aortogram

Preparing for an abdominal aortogram is important for ensuring the accuracy of the procedure. Before your appointment, your cardiology doctor will provide detailed instructions that are specific to your health needs. Generally, preparation involves fasting for six to eight hours before the procedure to ensure a clear imaging area. It’s also advisable to discuss your current medications with your doctor, as some may need to be paused or adjusted. Since contrast dye is used during the procedure, informing your healthcare provider about any allergies, particularly to iodine, is vital. Dress comfortably for your appointment and arrange for a driver, as you may experience mild dizziness or fatigue.

What Does an Abdominal Aortogram Detect?

An abdominal aortogram can detect aneurysms, which are bulges in the aorta wall that can burst if they become too large. It also helps identify blockages or stenosis, where the arteries become narrowed by plaque build-up, and dissections, where a tear in the artery wall allows blood to flow in between layers of the wall. Catching these conditions early can literally be a lifesaver by initiating timely interventions.

What to Expect During an Abdominal Aortogram

The procedure usually takes about an hour and is performed under local anesthesia, meaning you'll be awake but will not feel any pain in the area being examined. To begin, a small incision is made near the groin to access the femoral artery. A catheter is then guided through this artery into the aorta. Once in place, a contrast dye is injected via the catheter, and X-rays are taken to capture detailed images of the aorta. You may feel a warm sensation when the dye is injected, which is completely normal. After the imaging is complete, the catheter is removed, then the incision is closed and bandaged.

Post-Procedure Care Tips

After an abdominal aortogram, it's important to focus on recovery to ensure the best outcome. Initial recovery generally involves several hours of rest; during this time, your team will monitor your vital signs and the catheter insertion site for any signs of complications. It’s important to keep the insertion site clean and dry to prevent infection. Avoid strenuous activities as well as heavy lifting for several days to allow the artery to heal properly. Stay hydrated and follow any additional care instructions provided by your doctor, such as taking prescribed medications. If you experience any unusual symptoms, such as severe pain, swelling, or changes in the color or temperature of the leg where the catheter was inserted, contact your doctor immediately.

My experience with the Capitol Cardiology Associates office was outstanding. From the time I initially talked to Dr Shetty on the phone to the moment I checked out. I had a very pleasant encounter with the front desk personnel. The staff is kind, gentle and informative. Pamela was very efficient, skilled and smart.  Took time to explain the procedure and broke it down in easy terms. I recommend this group with no reservations to whoever needs a cardiologist.

I had an excellent experience at Capitol Cardiology Associates. From the moment I walked into the suite everyone was friendly and courteous. When I was taken in the back the Medical Assistant was very professional and made me feel comfortable. My Cardiologist, Dr. Venugopal, had an excellent bedside manner and reassured me that all was okay. The checkout receptionist was very helpful as well. She made sure I had all the documents I needed and provided a copy to my primary care physician. Well done guys!??

My nurse was very nice as well. But my doctor, Dr. Foushee was attentive to symptoms & asked lots of question to find out the problem & it's source. This was my first visit to a specialist, Dr. Venugopal. While the appointment took time to get, I was greeted promptly, the staff treated me well both coming in and leaving and the doctor is one of the finest I've encountered. Not only was he informative, his professional demeanor was complemented by a a humor that matched my own, a talent not always found in potentially serious situations. I would highly recommend!

I really was sick not knowing just how sick. My PC referred me to Dr. Clarence Fendly with only three visits two office and one hospital I am great. I thank God for him. He explained everything to me where I could understand,  but he's gone now, and I am going to miss him. I feel sorry for all on this side of the earth that never had the opportunity to get his help. Where ever he's moved on to someone will be blessed. Thanks Dr. Fendley. Rhonda McNair
