Dr. Sonali Kumar Sharma is a board-certified cardiologist with specialized expertise in advanced cardiac imaging, including cardiac CT and cardiac MRI. She completed an advanced fellowship in Cardiac Imaging at Georgetown University/MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Prior to this, she completed her general cardiology fellowship in the Academic Research Track at Emory University School of Medicine, where she also completed her residency in Internal Medicine. Dr. Sharma is a native of the DC Metropolitan area and her interest in cardiology began at a very young age when she experienced the devastating loss of her grandmother to heart disease; her grandmother's memory and influence compelled her to immerse herself in the rigorous training experiences necessary to become a cardiologist.
Dr. Sharma earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Psychology from The George Washington University. Throughout her academic journey, she has been recognized for her excellence with numerous honors, awards, and multiple accolades for clinical and research excellence at Emory University.
A passionate leader in her field, Dr. Sharma has held significant leadership roles, including Chair of the Women in Cardiology Committee at Emory University and as a member of the American College of Cardiology’s Women in Cardiology Section Leadership Council. Her commitment to advancing cardiovascular care is further reflected in her prolific research contributions. Dr. Sharma has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals such as the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Journal of the American Heart Association, Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions, and The International Journal of Cardiovascular Imaging. Her research has spanned a wide range of topics, including coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, coronary angiography in non-obstructive coronary artery disease, and the development of wall shear stress models to predict vulnerable atherosclerotic plaque in patients with stable chest pain.
Dr. Sharma’s academic contributions also include presentations at major national conferences such as the American College of Cardiology Scientific Sessions, where she has presented original research on coronary physiology and interventional cardiology.
With a deep dedication to clinical excellence, Dr. Sharma’s work reflects a commitment to innovation, patient-centered care, and advancing the field of cardiology. She continues to pursue her passion for improving cardiovascular outcomes and aims to contribute to the broader clinical cardiology community through leadership and advocacy for her patients.
In her spare time, Dr. Sharma enjoys spending time and traveling with her family, writing, and playing with her adorable French Bulldog Louis.
